Homestead Exemption - Declaration of Domicile

Every resident of the State of Florida who owns a dwelling in Florida and resides in that dwelling as his permanent home may be eligible for the real estate Homestead Exemption. This is a great benefit if you own a Naples home.  If you live in the property it will qualify.

Once you have the Homestead Exemption, you are allowed a reduction of $50,000 from the assessed value of your dwelling/ home, condo.  You must be a permanent resident of Florida as of Jan. 1st of the year you apply for the exemption.  You can apply before Jan. 1st if you wish, but the application will only be actually considered accepted after March 1st of each year for the succeeding year.  With rising real estate values, it is considered to be wise to have the homestead exemption.

To prove legal residence:  Show evidence of property ownership (deed), your social security number, Collier county Voter card if you have one, Florida driver's license, Florida vehicle registration.   Or, you may simply go to the Clerk of Courts office and file a Declaration of Domicile.  You must have legal title and reside as of Jan 1st.
